Awesome idea for Father's Day gift: The Geek Dad Book for Aspiring Mad Scientists: The Coolest Experiments and Projects for Science Fairs and Family Fun

Thank you, Daily Cheapskate reader, Benjy M., for this awesome Father's Day gift suggestion! Get The Geek Dad Book for Aspiring Mad Scientists: The Coolest Experiments and Projects for Science Fairs and Family Fun on Amazon for $10.96 with free Prime or SuperSaver (minimum purchase $25) shipping.

Benjy got this book for Father's Day last year and loved it so much, he's giving it to his brother-in-law for Father's Day this year (well, the book and also a round of golf...).    Benjy said it really helped him connect with his kids, especially one daughter who is a little withdrawn and quiet, but loves doing fun "sciency" projects.

While you're checking out this book as a Father's Day gift, take a look at the other Geek Dad books.  I've heard great things about them as well.

Get a free $5 Gap gift card from Wrapp (and send some free gift cards to your Facebook friends)

I am having a lot of fun with my new app, Wrapp.

Sign up for Wrapp here (you'll need to use your Facebook account) and you will automatically get a free $5 Gap gift card.  In order to access your gift card, you'll need to download the Wrapp app to your iPhone or Android smartphone.  Once you download the app and sign in, the gift card will appear and you have thirty days to use it.  When you are in-store, just ask the cashier to scan it for you at checkout.

You can also give your Facebook friends free gift cards through Wrapp. Just select a friend, and send him/her over a $5 Gap, Sephora, Fab, H&M, SpaFinder, Threadless, Wayfair, Bjorn Borg, Happy Socks, Brooklyn Industries, Wayfair gift card, a $10 gift card at WESC and a $20 gift card at Warby Parker Eyewear.  I'm assuming that Wrapp picked up my location and that some of these vendors are local to Colorado.  You can also gift a Facebook friends a free month of the Wall Street Journal Digital and Wall Street Journal Weekend.  I guess this is Wrapp's way of bringing new users in, as none of the free gift cards can be accessed without downloading the app to your iPhone or Android.  Sadly, Wrapp is not yet available in Israel (as I found out when I tried to gift some of my Israeli Facebook friends).

I've been having a blast sending lots of my friends free $5 gift cards (I'm hoping some of them will get a clue and send some back to me!).  My favorite are the Gap and Sephora cards.  The gift cards expire one-month after they are sent, so use them as soon as you can.

Lego-shaped candy mold for $4.55

This is such a neat idea!  Amazon has got this Lego-shaped Candy Mold for just $4.55 with free Prime or SuperSaver (minimum $25 purchase) shipping.
    Features:
  • FDA approved.
  • Mold is also suitable for molding soap, plaster and cement.
  • 8" x 2" x 10" and weighs 0.2 ounces
  • Not suitable for children under 3 years old.
  • Great for Lego parties.
Check out these chocolate lego bricks that one customer made with the mold:

And the Lego-shaped Candy Mold works with colored candy melts too:

And you can actually build stuff (!!!!) with these chocolate/candy bricks.  It doesn't look like they actually interlock, since there are no holes underneath the bricks, but they do stack up beautifully:

Or use them to adorn cakes:

All of these pictures were posted on the Amazon listing by actual purchasers of the Lego-shaped Candy Mold, so you know these creations are actually do-able.  The Lego-shaped Candy Mold received 4 out of 5 stars over 19 customer reviews.   The only negative comment that I saw in any of the reviews was that the Lego blocks come out larger than real Legos do (in my book, that's no big deal).   Here's what one Amazon customer had to say:
The Building Blocks candy mold was PERFECT for the Lego-themed cake I made for my son's 1st Birthday! The mold made some VERY LARGE chocolate pieces but they turned out perfectly. Chocolate popped right out of the mold and left virtually no mess behind!
Get this Lego-shaped Candy Mold for $4.55 with free Prime or SuperSaver shipping now, before Amazon pulls one of their infamous price hikes.

The end is near! (the end of the month, that is...)

The end of the month is not just near, it's today!  We can look forward to some new coupons popping up in the changing of the (coupon) guard tomorrow.  It also means that many of your favorite coupons, you know, the ones you've been meaning to print but haven't gotten round to, are going to disappear.  If you've got any coupons on Coupons.comSmartSourceRed PlumWhole FoodsTargetBetty Crocker, or Cellfire, that you've been eyeing, now is a good time to put paper in the printer.  I'm also headed out to Staples to use my  Staples Rewards certificate, which expires tomorrow.

Time to really get ready for the summer!  Get out the grill and outdoor furniture, celebrate graduations, Father's Day, and finalize summer vacation plans.   I'm starting to really square away my plans for our Fourth of July Big Barbecue.  Because of the warm weather, our menus are going to get lighter and include more produce, ice cream, beverages, fewer soups, heavy meats and starches, and we'll adjust our shopping accordingly.  Bring on the summertime!

The Coupons.com Savings Club: does it pay to pay-to-save?

Back in February, I signed up for a free trial year of Coupons.com Savings Club.  The Savings Club offers you higher value coupons than the regular ones on Coupons.com.  That free year offer is long gone, but there is still a 30 day free trial available, and the good news is that the Savings Club has dropped their monthly price from $10 to $3 (or $30 for the whole year...two months free).

Although I was very skeptical about paying for higher value coupons initially, after using the Savings Club for about 3 months, I'm surprised to say, I think I'm a believer.  I'll probably stay on after my trial expires.  I don't know that I'd do it for $10 per month; that struck me as exorbitant, but I would easily do it for $3 per month, because the value of the Savings Club coupons usually exceed that by at least 4 or 5 times.

Just today, I found this coupon for BOGO on Milk Bone Trail Mix for dogs.  Right there, that's a $4 savings (even more, actually, because there are corresponding Target coupons, but I digress).

Last week I found this buy-two-get-one-free coupon on Milky Way bars.  That didn't help my diet too much, but my sweet tooth didn't complain at this awesome deal.

VS

Sometimes you can get the same coupons available on regular Coupons.com, but with added value.  Everyone had access to the $3 off the Amerigas Cylinder coupon on the right, but I used the Savings Club $3.25 off coupon on the left, and as we know, in couponing, every penny adds up.

The best way to tell if the Savings Club is for you to take their free 30-day trial. It does require a credit card, and they will start charging you $3 per month if you don't cancel after 30 days, so be sure and set a Google reminder (or put it on your calendar) for at least two day before, so you can decide if it's worthwhile for you.  If you are printing at least $3 in coupons not found under the ordinary Coupons.com,  consider sticking with it.  As we know, sometimes, it very much pays to pay-to-save.  I consider the Savings Club a better investment in saving than a subscription to All You magazine.

Shipping is $5.99 (unavoidable), but even with that, it's still less expensive than the "trees."

This hammock is fantastic. Beautiful colors match any decor. The weight limit at 450 makes it ideal for anywhere, accommodating my husband, myself, and our 11 year old daughter with weight to spare. Redeem a $5 Target gift card on Shopkick today, and snag a 200 point bonus on your next Target walk-in

Lots of you signed up for Shopkick when they ran their last Target 200-points promotion last week.  If you've been walking in to Target stores at all the last few days, you might have enough kicks (points) by now to redeem a $5 Target gift card (1,250 kicks). If you've got the 1,250 kicks, redeem a $5 Target gift card today and you will get a bonus 200 kicks on your next Target walk-in (usually 60 kicks).   This promo is for today, 5/30/12, only.  The 200 kicks bonus is valid on Target walk-ins on 5/31 and on.  One 200 kicks bonus per Shopkick user.

What is  ShopKick? Only my current favorite smartphone app.

Basically, it's a smartphone app that rewards shoppers with "kicks" (formerly called "kickbucks," points which can be redeemed for store gift cards) simply for walking into a brick & mortar store. Sounds pretty un-techy, you say, for this day and age? Not at all. How does Shopkick know you are actually in the store? Because you "check in" via the smartphone application that locates you via GPS. Shopkick also gives you points for scanning items in-store and in some cases, for buying items. Shopkick also has some unique digital coupons (that I haven't seen anywhere else) that you just show to the cashier and ask her to scan when you purchase something in a Shopkick member store. Finally, if you'd want to earn points without getting in the car, Shopkick's also got "Instant Surprises" that allow you to earn kickbucks while sitting on your couch. The points accumulate pretty quickly (frankly, I can't be bothered with points programs where you need to wait forever for a reward).  I'm now on my fifth Target gift card reward.

Now, here's an even faster way to get Shopkick on your phone, and get a 50 kicks bonus to boot. Click here through my special link (and thanks for letting me refer you), and fill out the short form. Shopkick will text the link to their (free) app directly to your smartphone. Just click on the link in the text and it will download and install on your phone. You'll get an instant 50 kickbucks just for signing up through my referral link. Gift cards start at 500 kickbucks, so when you refer nine more of your friends, you'll qualify for a gift card immediately. I love this app.

Using Shopkick is pretty intuitive, but for more info on how to navigate through it and earn kicks, check out my Shopkick tutorial here.

Another crazygood deal from Gevalia: free Stainless-Steel blender with your 2 pound coffee order (and free shipping)

Gevalia

Get four 8 oz, boxes of coffee and a stainless-steel blender, all for $19.99 with free shipping!  This is really a heckuva deal, possibly rivaling their coffeemaker one, as it's nearly impossible to get a decent blender at that price, let alone bundled with 2 pounds of gourmet coffee.  This offer will expire on 6/1/12.

The Gevalia 2-Speed Stainless Steel Blender has a 48 fl. Oz. glass carafe with pour lid, and removable dishwasher safe parts.

Gevalia offers a huge selection of delicious flavored and unflavored coffees including many kosher ones under OK supervision (some are even kosher for Passover!).  The teas, to my knowledge, have no hechsher.

BTW, ordering this deal does sign you up for Gevalia's automatic shipment program, but you have absolutely no commitment at all to it.  After your blender and coffee arrive, call Gevalia at 1-800-GEVALIA (1-800-438-2542) or log into your Gevalia account online and cancel your membership with zero further obligation.

We just did this offer and when the blender arrives, I'm going to put it away for Pesach.

Another $0.75 coupon for any Earthbound Farms Organic produce

Earthbound Farms has got another special coupon available today for $0.75 off any Earthbound Farms Organic product.  Click here and log in or sign up to get started.  After you log in or sign up, click "Take Today's Step" to print the coupon.  It will look like the coupon is only for the Broccolette, but once it prints, you'll see it's for ANY Earthbound Farms Organic product.  Coupon expires a month forward, 6/29/12.

These coupons have been coming up about once a week, and I'll happily print them (twice) each time they show.  I've been using most of them on Earthbound Farms organic carrots at Target.  With this coupon and my RedCard, I can get a bag of regular organic carrot for $0.32 per bag and baby carrots for $0.90 per bag.  I've been buying both kinds.  We snack on baby carrots all the time, and I've been peeling and freezing the regular carrots for future soups.  Just another way to buy organic produce without breaking the bank.

UPDATE, PRICE DROP: Two great air conditioner deals on Amazon and some tips for buying AC units

Amazon has lowered the price on these two air conditioner units!  If you're in the market for one and these are the right size, snag them now before the prices go up in July and August!

---------------------------------------------------------------

Who would have thought that Amazon would have some great deals on an air conditioner units?

Get this Frigidaire window air conditioner model #FRA052XT7 for just $109.99 $123.50 with free shipping.  This air conditioner is 5,000 BTUs, so it will only cool off small rooms that are 150 square feet or less.  It's got an antimicrobial filter that reduces bacteria, room odors, and other airborne particles, and a pleated quick mount window mounting kit that makes it easy to install in your window.  It got 4 out of 5 stars over 75 customer reviews.  The identical item cost $149.07 on Target.com.

If you've got a larger room to cool, check out this Frigidaire air conditioner model #FRA126CT1 for $295.98 $319.13 with free shipping. This model is 12,000 BTUs, so it can be used for a room up to 640 square feet. It has electronic controls with a temperature sensing remote (great for a bedside table...you won't have to get out of  bed to make it cooler or warmer), clean air ionizer and an antimicrobial filter. It does require a 110 volt grounded outlet, so be sure you have one or can convert a current one.  This identical model goes for $349.97 +  $40 shipping at PC Richards.

When buying an air conditioner, make sure you match up the size of the room to the number of BTUs of the unit. These are the recommended BTU's for a given cooling area from Consumer Reports:
  • Small room: 5,000 - 6,000 BTU for 100-300 sq. ft.
  • Medium room: 7,000 - 8,200 BTU for 250-550 sq. ft.
  • Large room: 9,800 to 12,500 BTU's for 350-950 sq. ft. area.
Buying an air conditioner follows the same rules as buying any other household appliance, so check out some of my frugal appliance-buying tips here and here.   When buying an air conditioner unit, I like to stick to well-known brand names like Frigidaire, LG, or Freidrich.  Buying one online has the huge advantage of shipping deals for a very heavy item, like the free SuperSaver shipping on Amazon or the $2.95 standard shipping at Overstock.com.

The one thing about an air conditioner that is different from buying other appliances is the seasonality of demand for it.  So one of the best ways to save money on an air conditioner is to buy it NOW, before the real hot weather begins.  I guarantee, these prices will be higher come July and August.  I'm a huge advocate of off-season buying.  Buy something you need when other people don't need it and you will save a bundle.

Anyone else have tips on buying air conditioners or other cooling appliances?
