Light posting this week

As I'm sure you might have noticed, my posting to Daily Cheapskate has been a little, er, sporadic this week and last.  I'm traveling in New York, and it isn't always easy to get to my laptop.   Please bear with me over the next few days, as I try to post as much and as often as I can.  I also might be a little unresponsive to your emails. Rest assured,  I'll be back in the saddle on Monday, when I return to Denver!

Thanks for hanging in there...

BOGOHO + 20% off at Payless = 40% off! Only through 1/27/13.

There's nothing quite like stacking discounts to really maximize your savings.  When you can pile one discount on top of the other, pounce like a cougar and shopshopshop.

Payless Shoes has just started one of their cyclical BOGOHO (Buy-One-Get-One-Half-Off) sales.  Now, if you've been reading this blog for a while and have become a pro at Shoppers Math, you know that BOGOHO, when both items are the same price, is the equivalent of 25% off.  (When the items are different prices, the amount of the discount drops.)  So the key to maximizing your savings in BOGOHO sale is to buy pairs of items that are the same price.

The BOGOHO discount will come up automatically at Payless.com.  No need to enter any promo code.

Through 1/27/13, you can get an additional 20% off on top of the BOGOHO discount.  Enter promo code 85636 at checkout, and you will see an additional price drop of 20% on everything in your shopping cart.  For my fellow math junkies, 25% off and then 20% off means you're getting 40% off (.75 *.80=.60).  For those of you who are allergic to math, you'll have to trust me:  you're getting a whopping 40% off on your total price!

Lots of you have written in and told me how much you love Payless Shoes for purchasing your kids' shoes.  This 40% off deal could be an amazing find for mid-winter boots and shoes.  As for me, we don't have kids and I'm not crazy about the quality of most Payless shoes, but I'll shop their accessories department like nobody's business.  I get almost all of my winter tights at Payless.  But when I checked the site today, I saw this really pretty satin evening clutch (pictured above), and I remembered that a friend of mine needed one of these for a wedding she was attending, so I figured, I'll just treat both of us to this pretty purse.

It's priced at $16.99.   After I put two of them in my cart, the price of one of them immediately dropped to $8.50 (BOGOHO).

Then I entered promo code 85636, and the price of the entire shopping cart dropped by 20% or $5.10.  I selected free store pickup to save on the ridiculous $5.95 shipping charge (Payless stores are everywhere), and my grand total was $20.39 for both clutches, or just $10.20 each.  What a score.

Go to the Payless site here, and stack these savings:
  1. Buy-One-Get-One-Half-Off
  2. 20% with promo code 85636
  3. Free store pickup (eliminates shipping charge)

Your total will be $9.34 for the 10 boxes, or $0.93 each, shipped.

You can UNsubscribe to Subscribe & Save very easily, by going to your account as soon as your order has shipped. Even if (worse case scenario) you completely forget to unsubscribe, Amazon will not send out an additional order without shooting you a warning email first, giving you ample time to unsubscribe and cancel any additional orders in time. It's pretty much an all-win proposition. Shipping on Subscribe & Save items is always free.

Hot water urns for $36-$37 with free shipping

A friend of mine needs to replace her hot water urn and asked me to help her find a good one for less money, so I did a little urn research. The last time I priced urns was before Pesach, and I'm shocked to say that (unlike all other appliances) urns have actually dropped slightly in price since last year.

Amazon has got some very good deals on hot water urns.

Get this Hamilton Beach 42-cup urn for $35.99 with free shipping.  It got 4.2 out of 5 stars over 60 customer reviews.  If you routinely entertain large crowds, this is a perfect sized urn for your needs.  My Amazon price tracker tells me that the lowest price that has ever been posted for this urn was $35, so you're pretty close to the rock bottom price.

But, if you would rather not have such a large hot water urn in your kitchen, here's a slightly smaller version for about the same price:

Amazon has got this Westbend 30-cup urn for $37.29 with free shipping.  It got 4.4  out of 5 stars over 146 customer reviews. This is actually the urn that we have for Pesach.  I purposely wanted a smaller capacity urn because we have a small kitchen, the water heats faster, and you can refill an urn on YomTov (not Shabbos though!) as long as there is enough water to start with so that the light doesn't change color, so I wasn't really concerned about needing more hot water for my guests.  I also really like the Westbend name.
