The Joy of Dump Cakes and a free recipe book download


You know that awful moment of panic when you realize that you have 12 guests coming for dinner, completely forgot about dessert, realize the bakery is closed, and have only 2 hours until Shabbat?  Yes, that moment.  It's not a great moment.  But hope abounds.

"Dump cake" is not the most attractive name for a dessert, but it is a very practical category of dessert to have in your baking repertoire.  It's basically an easy twist on upside-down cake, with fruit or some other kind of soft filling layered on top of a cake recipe.  The name comes from the fact that you "dump" the cake out of the mold when it cools.
    The wonderful things about dump cakes:
  1. they are super-easy and super-fast to make. 
  2. can be adapted to work with your favorite no-brainer cake recipes or with (I love it) a cake mix.
  3. always look way more impressive than the amount of effort that went into them
  4. usually can be made with the ingredients in your pantry (nothing like a no-shop cake). 
  5. can be very easily adapted with healthier organic ingredients, or for gluten-free diets or, my favorite, for kosher-for-Passover recipes (yes!  You can improve on that horrible KLP sponge cake mix you bought on sale!).
