3.5 lb. Beneful dog food for $1.49 at Petsmart ($0.43 per lb.) and 40 lb. of Pedigree for $19.98 at Walmart ($0.50 per lb.)

Once again, Petco has got a great $5 coupon for Beneful dog food (without any size restrictions) here, expiring 10/15/13.  When I priced the smallest bag of Beneful at Petco, the 3.5 lb. bag came to $7.99, or $2.99 after the coupon.  Eh. $0.85 per lb.; not such a huge bargain.

But happily, all Petsmart stores will readily accept Petco coupons (and vice versa), and Petsmart has the same 3.5 lb. bag of Beneful for $6.49, or just $1.49 after the $5.00 coupon.  This comes to slightly less than $0.43 per lb., an excellent buy.

(Kosher-keeping Daily Cheapskate readers, be aware that some varieties of Beneful contain milk or yogurt (like Healthy Growth for Puppies or Incredibites), and while your pet does not need to keep kosher, he is not allowed to eat food which has both meat and milk processed together.  Make sure you read the ingredients before you buy any pet food.  We get the regular Beneful which does not list dairy in any of the ingredients.  In general, dogs have a tough time digesting dairy anyway.)

I know some dog owners don't like Beneful because it contains sugar, so if you're looking for a good deal on other dog food, check out the $0.50/lb. Pedigree deal.

Just to give you an idea of how excellent this price is, Amazon has a 36 lb. bag of Pedigree Adult Complete for $45.35, more than twice the price and 10% less of the amount of dog food.

The Walmart Pedigree deal also beats out the Costco price on just about every 40 lb. bag of dog food that I've seen.

We feed our dogs the Pedigree with a some of the Beneful mixed in.  They love the taste of Beneful, but the Pedigree is healthier without the sugar, so they get both the taste and nutrition, and we save a small fortune on dog food.  Even with two dogs, my budget for dog food and treats is about $200 per year.
