STILL AVAILABLE: Amazon Fire for $49.99. If you haven't pre-ordered yet, please read

If you haven't pre-ordered your Amazon Fire tablet for $49.99 yet, I urge you to do so before the release on 9/30/15.  Why?  Because there are rumblings out there in the news media that Amazon might actually be selling the Fire below cost, and if that's the case, this pricing will not be sustainable for long.

There have been $50 tablets out there since the iPad's invention, but let's face it: they were crummy, slow, cheap, do-nothing tablets. You got what you paid for.

Last week, Amazon released an brand new Fire for $49.99 shipped.  And it looks like you are going to get a LOT more than you pay for.

I can't seem to find a downside to this deal. "The breakthrough price of Fire combined with Amazon’s durable engineering opens up many new ways for you to upgrade your rooms: in the kitchen as a digital cookbook or to watch your favorite cooking show, in the TV room as an entertainment controller, in the bedroom to watch a movie or check the weather before you get dressed, and in your car for backseat entertainment."

It's got 8 GB of storage but (unlike most other tablets) you can expand the storage by adding a 16, 32 or 128 GB memory card, as needed, which is a brilliant feature (why can't I do that on my iPad?).

My husband and I each own iPads, but we jumped on the train and pre-ordered a $49.99 Fire.   There is basically nothing that our iPads can do that the Fire can't do, at least not from what I'm reading. I was concerned about being able to run MS Office apps on the Fire, but after a little research, I discovered that I could run an app called Office Suite Professional 8 (free!), which allows me to us to create, open and edit documents, powerpoint slideshows and spreadsheets completely compatible with MS Office (same extensions).   You can also watch movies, take pictures, play games, Skype, get to the Internet, check your email, log into social sites, listen to music, read e-books, etc. on the Fire.  If you drop it, spill coffee on it, or it gets stolen or lost, it's a $50 Fire, not a $500 iPad.   (We spend more than that on a good dinner out.)

I think this is a terrific order, so don't let it pass you by, especially before holiday season.

And, to ramp things up, if you buy five Fires, you'll get a sixth one free, with promo code FIRE6PACK, which lowers the price to $41.66 per Fire.  Excellent for gift giving in the holiday season, but also fabulous if you want to get together with a few friends to lower your cost by a solid 17%.
