We own two of the "old" Fire 7s and they are great for traveling; very lightweight and fully functional as a mid-range tablet.  If we lose them or drop them, we are not going to get really upset over such a low-cost tablet (as opposed to my $500 iPad!)

A word of advice: if you are going to watch movies or play games on your Fire, definitely get the 16-GB.
