New kosher for Passover food deals on Amazon: honey, ketchup, confectioner's sugar, salad dressing, potatoes

While most of the really good KLP food deals on Amazon are long gone, a few popped up over the weekend.  If you've got a little shopping left to do, there's still some time to snag these bargains.  Most of these come in larger quantities that you either will want to split up among friends or stockpile.

If you've got an Amazon Visa Rewards card and have not used your 20% discount on Amazon groceries yet,   now would be a great time, since this discount expires on 3/31/12.   Just pay for your order with your Amazon Rewards Visa and use promo code MAR20OFF at checkout.

Glicks 16 oz. honey, pack of 3, $15.74 or $5.25 each, with free Prime or SuperSaver (minimum $25 order) shipping.  Use your 20% Amazon Visa discount and that price drops to $12.59 or $4.20 each).  A little pricey for a lb. of honey but still better than the Lieber's KLP version.

Gefen 28 oz. ketchup, pack of 6, $23.94 or $3.99 each, with free Prime or SuperSaver (minimum $25 order) shipping. Use your 20% Amazon Visa discount and that price drops to $19.15 or $3.19 each).   We aren't buying KLP ketchup this year, but if it's a must-have in your family, this price isn't bad.

Savion Zesty Garlic 8 oz. dressing, pack of 6, $16.14 or $2.69 each (no picture available), with free Prime or SuperSaver (minimum $25 order) shipping. Use your 20% Amazon Visa discount and that price drops to $12.91 or $2.15 each).   As KLP salad dressings go (most are truly awful), Savion is actually pretty good-tasting.

Gefen Confectioners Sugar 16 oz., pack of 6, $17.90 or $2.98 each (no picture available), with free Prime or SuperSaver (minimum $25 order) shipping. Use your 20% Amazon Visa discount and that price drops to $14.32 or $2.39 each).

Liebers Whole White Potatoes,15-oz., pack of 8, $13.52 or $1.69 per can  (no picture available), with free Prime or SuperSaver (minimum $25 order) shipping. Use your 20% Amazon Visa discount and that price drops to $10.82 or $1.35 each).  I use these for when I get to that point when I absolutely cannot peel yet another potato.  Open a can, toss it in with a chicken recipe and voila, instant side dish.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ragalta Platinum Series Gold Rim 20-Piece Dinnerware Set with Dinner Plates, Soup Bowls, Cups, Saucers , $14.99 with free shipping.  Dishwasher safe.  If I needed dishes for Pesach, I'd get three or four of these services for four.  I think the gold rim is elegant and at this price, if something breaks, no tears or regrets.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are lots of other kitchen bargains to be snapped up here, 48 items in all  (2 are sold out already), so browse around.  Steer clear of the Ninja blenders on the sale; while they are featured at great prices, they are factory refurbished.  Besides the kashrut issues this brings up, I give refurbished appliances a very wide berth on principle.  Also, the Cuisinart Warming Tray at $49.99 strikes me as a good deal, but this Oster Warming Tray for $24.71 on Amazon, which is actually slightly larger, strikes me as a much better one.  All Flash Sale items ship free.  Remember, these deals are gone at midnight EST.

SECOND PRICE DROP: Oster Stainless Steel Warming Tray now $24.71 with free shipping

DailyCheapskate has reached 600 Facebook likes, and to celebrate, I'm going to do a "Flash" Pesach giveaway. The very generous folks at Party City have passed along a few Pesach-related goodies: some Pesach oven mitts and dish towel, matzah spreader knives, a matzah crumb sweeper, and some Seder finger puppets, to give to one lucky DailyCheapskate reader. Since everyone is so crazybusy shopping and cleaning these days, this will be a quickie Flash Giveaway that will be over on Sunday, 3/25/12 at 8:00 pm EST.

To be entered, you need to have liked DailyCheapskate on Facebook AND then leave a comment below this post telling me what your favorite part of the Passover seder is.  Random.org will choose a winner on Sunday evening.

What's my favorite part of the seder?  It's definitely the singing.

Fine Print:  you must be over 18 and a resident of the USA to win.  You also must not be a relative of mine or an employee of Party City.  The retail value of this giveaway is approximately $50.  This will undoubtedly be a low-entry giveaway, so you've got a great chance of winning.

Comment below.

Just a quick note on the commenting: 1) make sure you leave your email address (in the format "frugalskate at gmail dot com") so that I can notify you if you've won and 2) if you're not logged into a gmail account, the easiest commenting selection is "Name/URL" where you can leave the URL part blank.

Saving money on Passover shopping: stuff that I am NOT buying for Pesach

If you recall the three-part guest series I wrote last year on "Shopping for Pesach on a Budget," one of the very first ideas that we discussed on saving money was this:  Pesach is just one week. You can do without for one week.

So can I.

Here's a list of items I will not be buying this year:
  • KLP breakfast cereal.  Instead, I'll be making my family matzoh bri, eggs and fresh fruit in the morning.
  • KLP ketchup, fake mustard, wasabi sauce, artificial sweetner.  Why?
  • KLP coffee whitener.  It's disgusting.  There, I said it.  It's full of chemicals, expensive, has an aftertaste and never quite mixes into my coffee.  Instead, I intend to foray into the magical world of making almond milk from scratch.
  • KLP tuna.  Too expensive.  During the year, thanks to numerous coupons (including the ever-present Bumblebee coupon on Recyclebank) I pay anywhere from $0.20-$1.00 per can or pouch.  I won't pay $3 a can for Pesach.  This year, the OU  has once again certified as KLP the Costco Kirkland Atlantic frozen salmon fillets.  My family will be eating salmon instead of tuna.  I consider it an upgrade.
  • KLP canned or frozen vegetables, including ridiculously-priced Bodek stuff.  This year, thanks to numerous produce coupons available (Organic Girl, Cuties, grapefruits, some Target produce coups, and the $5 off $40 Sprouts coupon on Recyclebank, as well as others), I'll be using only fresh vegetables in my cooking.  The Star-K has a great online guide to checking vegetables here.
  • Specially KLP hechshered overpriced walnut oil, cottonseed oil, or any other KLP oil.  According to the OU, any Extra Virgin Olive Oil is fine for Pesach, so hello Costco Kirkland EVOO.
  • KLP Cooking spray.  Too expensive.  I have had a Misto sprayer for years now.  Fill it up with Costco EVOO (see above) and you're in business.
  • KLP Quinoa.  I might have gone for it if it were sold locally at a decent price, but the CRC specially certified KLP Quinoa come to about $6 per box with shipping, so no.
  • Wissotzky tea.  I bought lower-priced  Bigelow Tea (less than two bucks a box)  instead.  Tastes great, way cheaper, totally reliable Kof-K-P hechsher.  I will confess that I bought the Wissotzky Tea & Dreams set ($8 each). I'm bringing one as a hostess gift to a friend who has solemnly promised to give me one of the swizzle sticks.  I'm an absolute sucker for swizzle sticks.  Don't ask.  It's not pretty.
Here's what I did treat my family to this year:
What Pesach stuff are you NOT getting this year?  What made sense for you to splurge on?  What are you on the fence about?

40% off one item plus $5 off every $25 that you spend at Michaels

Pesach recipes and table settings: check out The Jewish Hostess

Tired of the same old potato kugel and paper plates?   Need a new infusion of ideas for Pesach recipes or table settings?  Hop on over to my former classmate (the Jewish Martha Stewart) Marlene Mayime's blog, The Jewish Hostess, for some beautiful, elegant new Pesach dishes and seder table arrangements.  When I grow up, I want my seder table to look like this.

Hot water urns $38-$40

We used to have one of those plastic hot water "pumps" for Pesach. Then we had to replace it.  Then we had to replace it again.  Then we had to replace it again.  You get the idea.  I'm pretty much done with the crummy-quality hot water pumps.

We got our trusty Plain Old Urn for Pesach about four years ago and never looked back.  We don't really need to worry about those nasty hard water deposits because it's used for only one week a year, so the inside still looks brand new.

Amazon has got some very good deals on hot water urns.  The first one is a little better than the second in price-per-capacity, but I'm going to share both of them because the first one is currently out of stock.  They are restocking it and you can still order it, but if'you're very nervous about the urn arriving before Pesach, order the second one.  It's about the same price but a smaller capacity.

Get this Hamilton Beach 42-cup urn for $37.99 with free shipping.  It got 4 out of 5 stars over 42 customer reviews, and $38 is a great price.  (Target's got it for $45 plus shipping.)  They are currently out of stock, but you can still order it and they will fulfill it as soon as they get more in.

But, if you're nervous about the timing, here's a slightly smaller version for about the same price:

Amazon has got this Westbend 30-cup urn for $39.89 with free shipping.  It got 4 1/2  out of 5 stars over 110 customer reviews.  Even with the smaller capacity, $40 is a really good price.  (Buy.com has it for $45.73.)  This is actually the urn that we have for Pesach.  I purposely wanted a smaller capacity because we have a small kitchen, the water heats faster, and you can refill an urn on YomTov (not Shabbos though!) as long as there is enough water to start with so that the light doesn't change color, so I wasn't really concerned about needing more hot water for my guests.  I also really like the Westbend name.

International Simplicity flatware set (service for 8+bonus) for $20.27

If you're looking for a very basic flatware set in service for 8, I don't think you'll do much better with the price than on this International Simplicity set for $20.27 with free Prime or SuperSaver (minimum purchase $25) shipping.  While I wouldn't buy 18/0 silverware for daily use, I'm perfectly comfortable buying it for Pesach since 1) it will be used for exactly one week per year and 2) since we don't have a Pesach dishwasher, the washing wear-and-tear will be minimal (although they are dishwasher safe anyway).

Besides the five-piece-per-setting service for 8, the set also includes a bonus of 8 steak knives and a hostess set including a sugar spoon, butter knife, pierced spoon, tablespoon, and a cold meat fork.  All this for $20.27?  Quite a steal.

Homemade almond milk

Two things I refuse to buy for Pesach this year:

  1. That chemical-laden,awful-tasting pareve coffee creamer that is kosher for Passover.
  2. The one brand of kosher for Passover almond milk that is available for a ridiculously high price.

Nope.  Not gonna do it.

And yet, I would still like to offer my guests coffee after the meals.  And most of my guests take some kind of whitener in their coffee.

This year, I'm making my own almond milk.

Here's the recipe from KosherEye.  I do not own a Vitamix, so I'm sure I will have to do some straining of the milk after I process the almonds, but that's fine; it's a one time thing and considering how easy and cheap it seems to be, I'm up for a little patchka-ing.

Wish me luck.  Have you ever made your own pareve milk?  Or mayo?  Or ketchup?  Or any other Passover item that you would normally buy in a package?  Let's hear (include recipes).

Kitchen Aid 4.5 quart lift stand mixer $149 shipped from Overstock

If you're looking for a smaller, more scaled-down Kitchen-Aid mixer for Passover, this one might fill the bill. Get this Kitchen-Aid with a 4.5 quart bowl for just $147.99 plus $1 shipping from Overstock.com.  That's pretty much the lowest price I've ever seen on any Kitchen-Aid ever.

Please note, this Kitchen-Aid only includes the beater attachment and does not include a dough hook or wire wisks ( both can be purchased separately).  I don't think you'll miss the dough hook if you are buying this strictly for Pesach.

Prestige white-on-white Pesach tablecloths with seder plate imprint, starting at $23 with free shipping

Prestige has come out with a white Passover tablecloth with a white-on-white imprint of the Seder Plate.  It's available in several sizes:

It also has the words "Chag HaCheirut" imprinted on it, which means Holiday of Freedom.  I guess that's a take on one of our alternate names for the holiday "Zman Cheiruteynu" (literally, Time of our freedom).

The tablecloths are 100% polyester, stain-repellent and no-iron (I love no-iron).  Designed in Israel.  Awesome hostess gift, or buy it for yourself and create a new tradition.
