Zevia is giving away 100 six-packs today

Zevia soda is giving away 100 six packs today.  Since entering this giveaway requires a little effort, the odds are decent that you might win!

Start filling out the form here. Here's where the effort comes in. Upload a picture to your Facebook timeline in which you tag Zevia (@Zevia).  Then copy the url of the photo into its appropriate place on the form and send it off to Zevia.  By doing so, you'll be subscribing to their email list.  They will send you an email to make sure you're using your own email address and then you'll need to click on the link in the email.

That's it.

See, I told you it would take some effort.  But it's worth it. Zevia is the only calorie-free soda that is actually healthy.  Seriously.  It's sweetened with stevia instead of artificial sweeteners and it contains no artificial flavors or colors (it's clear).

Don't forget to print their monthly coupons here.  Whole Foods has a $1 Zevia store coupon, good through 11/30/12 (in many WF stores, including all the Denver ones, you may stack both coupons on a single Zevia product).  Sprouts/Sunflower has a stackable $1 store coupon for Zevia as well.

The end is near! (The end of the month, that is...)

The end of the month is, well, today!

The end of the month means we can look forward to some new coupons popping up in the changing of the (coupon) guard on 11/1/12.

It also means that many of your favorite coupons, you know, the ones you've been meaning to print but haven't gotten round to, are going to disappear.  If you've got any coupons on Coupons.comSmartSourceRed PlumWhole FoodsTargetBetty Crocker, or Cellfire that you've been eyeing, now is a good time to put paper in the printer.

Thanksgiving is a mere 22 days away (which means Black Friday and Cyber Monday are close too!), and Chanukah is just 38 days away.  Getting nervous yet?

Make sure you hit all the post-Halloween clearance sales and stock up on costumes and candy for Purim (most of the candy can go in the back of the freezer, or it will go stale).  Winter gear, sweaters, coats, boots, are at the top of many of our shopping lists.  My husband and I personally have got a ton of house stuff to do this month:  our annual furnace maintenance, cleaning out the gutters, and some major garage organization, before we settle in for the cold.

Time to start seriously thinking about Chanukah (or Christmas) gifts, to avoid the expensive crunch in December.

In terms of food frugality, I've been freezing soups  and stews as quickly as I can make them.  We're getting into hot comfort-food mode.

Finally, here's an unusual Daily Cheapskate November request.  Quite a number of you on the East Coast have asked me to post more about putting together a frugal emergency kit, more deals on generators, etc., now that Sandy has done her damage.  I think every home should have an emergency plan and stash, just in case.

Onward to winter...

PRICE DROP: Nesco food dehydrator for $30.24 with free shipping (and why a food dehydrator is a great frugal investment)

PRICE DROP ALERT 10/31/12:  This Nesco Food Dehydrator just dropped to an all time low of $30.24 with free shipping. If you've been thinking about getting a food dehydrator (a surprisingly  practical and frugal kitchen appliance...read more below), I would say to pounce on this like a puma!

Amazon posted this unbelievably low price on the Nesco American Harvest FD-37 400 watt food dehydrator:  $35.28 $30.24 with free shipping.  I've never seen any food dehydrator at a price this low.  This item received a remarkable 4 out of 5 stars over 122 150 purchaser reviews, and most of the reviews are glowing (please read them before buying).

While your kitchen might be stocked with all sorts of tools like mixers, processors and blenders, I consider a dehydrator as essential as any of those.  I've written before on why I think a food dehydrator is a great frugal investment, and I'll repost some of my thoughts here.

I thought Joshua was nuts when he first suggested we buy the dehydrator (ten years ago), but we use it so often, it has really turned out to be a frugal purchase that actually saves us money.

A food dehydrator is one of the easiest-to-use kitchen appliances ever.  Basically, you slice whatever you'd like to dry and place it on the dehydrator tray.  Then you plug it in and walk away.  Go about your life and come back a few hours later.  Absolutely no culinary skills needed.  Okay, maybe one:  you need to be able to slice food.  Seriously.  That's it.  The trays go in the dishwasher when you're done, so cleanup is easy.
A food dehydrator is great for when you've got fruits and vegetables that are on their last legs and won't be good in a day or two. Just slice them up, put them on the dehydrator, and come back a few hours later. I use our dehydrator to make dried apples, pineapple, bananas, mangoes, carrots, and turnips.  Dried fruits and vegetables cost a small fortune these days, and a dehydrator allows you to make them for pennies on the dollar.  Any kind of dried root vegetables are delicious, and are a good substitute for potato chips for when you are watching your calories.

I also make dried jerky for my husband. Last Thanksgiving, we had so much turkey left over that after I was done freezing most of it, I made some turkey jerky that was awesome.  Just marinade the leftover turkey in Italian dressing overnight and then pop it on to the dehydrator. Joshua loves buying chuck steak (the cheapest cut) and making beef jerky.  He eats it as a quick protein fix snack.   As far as saving money, just compare it to the going rate of kosher jerky and you'll see why this machine pays for itself very quickly.  You can even make salmon jerky!

I also routinely dehydrate sliced lemons and limes and use them on Shabbat, when we offer our guests an after-meal tea with dessert. Dunk a dried slice of citrus in hot tea, and it instantly rehydrates it; it makes for wonderful presentation and I don't have to think about keeping fresh lemons around. I got the idea when I saw these dried lemon slices here, but didn't feel like $9/lb. for them.

We also use it to dry fresh spices (I grow basil and rosemary), and the freshly dried versions are a little more potent (and a heckuva lot cheaper) than the spices that comes in a jar.

A dehydrator is super-useful 1) if you're facing a long car or plane trip with no refrigeration available 2) if you want to keep healthy snacks in the house (that aren't full of sugar) that will keep for months in the cupboard 3) if you're going camping 4) if you are growing spices and have more on hand than you can use 5) if you're taking a trip abroad and won't have access to kosher meat 6) if you are seriously addicted to dried fruit or veggies 7) if you want to try some delicious kosher beef/chicken/turkey jerky without spending a small fortune. A food dehydrator is a great frugal investment.

Get the Nesco American Harvest FD-37 400 watt food dehydrator here for $35.28 $30.24 with free shipping.  If you want to try a more powerful dehydrator (takes less time to dry your food), the Nesco FD-75PR 700 watt food dehydrator is here for $71.33 $59.98 with free shipping.

UPDATE: $0.31 shipping today with your $31.00 order! Stack your savings and get 40% off at Payless

UPDATE 10/31/12:  today only, get $0.31 flatrate shipping when you spend a minimum of $31 at Payless.com.  No promo code necessary...shipping rate will show up in your cart when you meet the minimum purchase requirement.

There's nothing quite like stacking discounts to really maximize your savings.  When you can pile one discount on top of the other, pounce like a cougar and shop shop shop.

Payless Shoes has just started one of their cyclical BOGOHO (Buy-One-Get-One-Half-Off) sales.  Now, if you've been reading this blog for a while and have become a pro at Shoppers Math, you know that BOGOHO, when both items are the same price, is the equivalent of 25% off.  (When the items are different prices, the amount of the discount drops.)  So the key to maximizing your savings in BOGOHO sale is to buy pairs of items that are the same price.

The BOGOHO discount will come up automatically at Payless.com.  No need to enter any promo code.

Through 10/31/12, you can get an additional 20% off on top of the BOGOHO discount.  Enter promo code 70110 at checkout, and you will see an additional price drop of 20% on everything in your shopping cart.  Now for my fellow math junkies, 25% off and then 20% off means you're getting 40% off (.75 *.80=.60).  For those of you who are allergic to math, you'll have to trust me:  you're getting a whopping 40% off on your total price!

Lots of you have written in and told me how much you love Payless Shoes for purchasing your kids' shoes.  This could be an amazing find for pre-holiday savings.  As for me, we don't have kids and I'm not crazy about the quality of most Payless shoes, but I'll shop their accessories department like nobody's business.  I get almost all of my winter tights at Payless.  I love these supercute hats. Perfect for winter.

Check out the Flower Cloche in brown (pictured above) and the Cadet Bow hat in gray (pictured below).  When you buy one of each and stack the BOGOHO savings with the 20% promo code, you'll end up paying a grand total of $17.99 or just $9.00 per hat.  What a score.

Make sure you select free store pickup to save on the ridiculous $5.95 shipping charge (Payless stores are everywhere).

Go to the Payless site here, and stack these savings:
  1. Buy-One-Get-One-Half-Off
  2. 20% with promo code 70110
  3. Free store pickup (eliminates shipping charge)

ShopKick users, get 300 kicks when you walk in to Target today, 10/31/12

ShopKick users, get 300 kicks when you walk into any Target store today, 10/31/12!

Whoa!  Don't know what ShopKick is?  Want to sign up?  Here's the story.

Basically,  ShopKick is a smartphone app that rewards shoppers with "kicks" (formerly called "kickbucks," points which can be redeemed for store gift cards) simply for shopping at a brick & mortar store. Sounds pretty un-techy, you say, for this day and age? Not at all. How does Shopkick know you are actually in the store? Because you "check in" via the smartphone application that locates you via GPS. Shopkick also gives you points for scanning items in-store and in some cases, for buying items. Shopkick also has some unique digital coupons (that I haven't seen anywhere else) that you just show to the cashier and ask her to scan when you purchase something in a Shopkick member store. Finally, if you would like to earn points without even getting in the car, Shopkick's also got "Instant Surprises" that allow you to earn kicks while sitting on your couch. The points accumulate pretty quickly (frankly, I can't be bothered with points programs where you need to wait forever for a reward).  I've accumulated over $275 in Target gift cards to date, and my effort-to-reward ratio on this program is very, very low.

Here's how to get Shopkick on your phone, and get a 50 kicks bonus to boot. Click here through my special link (and thanks for letting me refer you), and fill out the short form. Shopkick will text the link to their (free) app directly to your smartphone. Just click on the link in the text and it will download and install on your phone. You'll get an instant 50 kickbucks just for signing up through my referral link. Gift cards start at 500 kicks, so between the 50 sign-up kicks and the 300 kicks you'll get today just for walking in to Target, you'll be 70% of the way to your first reward.  I love this app.

For you Daily Cheapskate readers who have been using Shopkick for a while, you know that they just upgraded to a new version, 3.0.  The new version face is not nearly as intuitive as version 2 of Shopkick and it takes some getting used to.  Just today, I finally figured out how to get to my Instant Surprises. One of my most popular posts is my Shopkick tutorial here. but it's basically geared for 2.0, and I need to update it in order for it to be useful to you.  Shopkick just came out with their first update to version 3, which is version 3.01.  I suggest you download it, as it corrects quite a few of the bugs that were in the initial version 3. If you're still having problems with the app, send your complaint to Shopkick via their special feedback form here.  Hang in there.  I'm not crazy about version 3, but the more I use it, the more I like it.

I'll be updating my tutorial soon. In the meantime, here's the Shopkick instructional tour on how to use version 3.
