Basically, this pitcher has two separate "compartments" in the center, one for holding fruit, like lemon slices, and one for holding ice.  The fruit compartment does mingle with the drink, infusing it with whatever you decide to put in there, like berries, herbs, citrus, etc., while the ice compartment does not mingle with the drink, so it doesn't dilute it but keeps it cold.

I think this is such a pretty look for the table!  You can do "themed" mixtures, like pomegranate and apples in the fruit compartment for Rosh Hashana, etc.
