They will do the job and let you check your email, browse online (with Wifi), most will let you watch movies (though some of these are low-memory, so the graphics might not be superior), take pictures, watch videos. These are great for traveling, because they are very lightweight, allow you to stay in touch, you don't have to unpack these at the security line, and if you break them, lose them or someone steals them, the loss is minimal (as opposed to the nervous Nellie that I become every time I travel with my iPad).
