It's been nearly a year since I posted my previous "How-to" on connecting you to Daily Cheapskate. We now have well over 5,000 followers on Facebook, and I couldn't be more pleased. We've definitely had some nice shifts in our readership numbers, so it's time to do an update.
Sooooo.....
If you're a Daily Cheapskate newbie, welcome aboard! And if you're a Daily Cheapskate veteran, as always, thanks so much for your loyalty.
I want to make sure that you all know how to keep in touch with Daily Cheapskate, so that you won't miss out on a single deal, coupon, freebie or post. Lotsa ways, and I hope you take advantage of at least one of them. Honestly, I hope you take advantage of ALL of them!
There is now a new way for you to receive a phone text from Daily Cheapskate each time I post a new deal. Why would you want to do this?
I get emails and messages from you guys all the time about how upset you are that an item has sold out or that you missed a deal, and then I get requests for me to email you or text you personally when the item restocks at the same price or the deal resurfaces. When I posted about this Magna Tiles and UGGs one-day 35% off promotion, the following day I had over 20 emails saying "I wish I had known sooner!" and "Why didn't you send out a special notice?!!!" etc. Honestly, I wish I could personally text all of you the second a great deal comes around, but I can't.
But now I can.
There are two ways you can receive a text every time I post a new deal on Daily Cheapskate, via Twitter and via Facebook. Receiving text updates via Twitter is much less complicated than receiving them from Facebook, so I'm going to give you the Twitter instructions here (but be aware that you can also set it up via Facebook as well).
Whether you're active or not on Twitter or Facebook, you can still use your accounts to receive text updates, as long as you own a smart phone capable of receiving texts.
Receiving Daily Cheapskate Texts on Your Smartphone Via Twitter:
Please note, the instructions for setting this up are for a PC or Mac. On a mobile device or a tablet, the screen layout might be a little different. It's easier to set this up initially on a computer.
If you don't already have one, click here and register for a Twitter account. If you already have one, just log in.
Then, go to your Account Settings and add your smart phone number.
Then, under "Text notifications," check off "Tweets from people you've enabled for mobile notifications."
The next step is crucial. Look at the image below. See that little wheelie thing to the immediate left of the "Following"button? If you single-click on it, you'll pull down a menu. From that menu, select "Turn on mobile notifications." (And if you ever change your mind about receiving texts from Daily Cheapskate, you'll click on the same thing, but it will say "Turn off mobile notifications.")
And that's basically it! From now on, whenever a new deal is posted on Daily Cheapskate, you'll receive a text. There is no extra charge for this service, but of course, your own phone service's texting charges do apply.
If you really don't want to deal with having a Twitter account, no worries. You are all set up for Twitter texting and don't ever need to log in to your account again, unless you'd like to make changes to your texting setup.
If you would just like to follow Daily Cheapskate on Twitter but not receive text updates, you can do that very easily too. Follow Daily Cheapskate's Twitter feed over here by clicking on the "Follow" button.
Following Daily Cheapskate on Facebook:
Hop over to the Daily Cheapskate Facebook page here and "Like" the page.
But "Liking" a Facebook page isn't enough anymore. You still won't see any Daily Cheapskate updates in your Facebook News Feed without this next step.
Hover your mouse over the blue "Liked" button and then click on "Get Notifications" so that there's a check mark next to it. Then put a check next to "See First" by clicking on it, so that Daily Cheapskate updates will come up early in your News Feed. Finally, also click on the "Follow" button, which should change to "Following" once you have clicked on it.
In theory, you should be seeing Daily Cheapskate posts in your Facebook News Feed now. But Facebook seems to changes its algorithms daily, and the only thing that is certain is that they are trying to reduce "organic reach," which means that posts that should "naturally/organically" reach you because you have subscribed to the page are not necessarily going to appear as they should. They want you to show that you really, really, really want to see these posts. Really, really. (I know. Good grief. )
No one really understands how Facebook works in terms of how or why some posts appear in your Feed and some don't, but it's becoming increasingly clear that the more popular a post is, the more popular a post becomes.
In other words, if you engage with the Daily Cheapskate page by liking, sharing and commenting, you will see more of it in your Facebook News Feed, and conversely, if you don't, you won't. So if you like any of the deals that are posted, please show me the love by "liking" or even better "sharing" the post on your timeline. Or both. If you have any questions or want to bring something to my attention (or have a Witty Quip, gosh I do love Witty Quips), please comment away!
The more you engage with Daily Cheapskate, the more you will be engaged with Daily Cheapskate.
Following Daily Cheapskate via email subscriptions:
I've got two email summary newsletters going out automatically, every day of the week, one at 2:00 p.m. PST, and one at 6:00 p.m. PST. (Yes, sometimes these newsletters go out on Shabbat, because they are automatic and I can't reign them in manually.) You can subscribe to either newsletter or, if you don't mind a little overlap, to both email newsletters. Email is a great way to keep in touch, but it's much less immediate than texting or social media, so if you rely on email exclusively, you run the risk of losing out on some deals, as some of them will expire before the newsletters go out. Nevertheless, it's a great reminder that Daily Cheapskate has got some new deals. So:
- Subscribe to the early email newsletter over here.
- Subscribe to the late email newsletter over here.
If you've subscribed and still not started to receive the Daily Cheapskate daily email, that's probably because you forgot to confirm your subscription. Easily fixed. Go to your email inbox and run a search on the "from" address FeedBurner Email Subscriptions <noreply+feedproxy@google.com>. If you have not already confirmed your subscription, you can still do it and subscribe! You must complete this step in order to receive newsletters from Daily Cheapskate.
And of course, you can always easily un-subscribe from any Daily Cheapskate email list that you have joined. Un-subcription is immediate and automatic, and you fall off my list right after you request it.

Following Daily Cheapskate via checking out Daily Cheapskate:
It should be fairly obvious that one of the best ways to keep up with Daily Cheapskate is simply to come and visit the webiste, but I think people are so tied to social connections these days, they lose sight of the forest for the trees. As immediate as social media is, there's no substitute for just plain looking at DailyCheapskate.com. If you really want to make sure you never miss a timely deal, check in once or twice or more a day.
And finally, while this is not a way to necessarily follow Daily Cheapskate, it certainly is a way to follow-up on Daily Cheapskate: email me!
