It's always a good idea to keep extra computer peripherals around. We keep a couple of backup extra mice (and keyboards) on the closet shelf all the time. This way, when your mouse dies (and sadly, all mice do eventually die), you won't have to run out to Radio Shack and plunk down $19.99 for an emergency mouse. Been there, done that.
