Shopping for Succos? Decorations, bee-traps, plastic silverware, trays and more

It's almost Sukkot!  In less than two weeks, we'll celebrate one of the most joyous holidays on the Jewish calendar.  It can also be one of the most costly holidays without some special planning and shopping.

I've posted about some of these great Sukkot/Succos bargains before, but I'm grouping them together both for your convenience and as a reminder.  There are some new Sukkot links in the mix as well.  Ready?  Go.

Here are a couple of Sukkot decoration ideas from Oriental Trading Company  Take advantage of the OTC free shipping promo code that's good through tomorrow, 9/20/12.  Enter WCE3583 through midnight Central Time on 9/20/12 to get free shipping on your entire order.

Check out 12-foot long ivy garland for $5.25 from OTC.  If you like to decorate your Sukkah with a fall/nature theme (as we do), this is an awesome price on an extra long chain of leaves.

This pretty 9-foot flower garland for $10.50 from OTC has the added advantage of also being a string-light.  It contains 50 tiny bulbs to help light up your Sukkah at night and it's safe for outdoor use.

Don't forget about this Sukkah keepsake box for $14.73 shipped from Amazon.  (Amazon was out of them for a while but have re-stocked.)  If you want to use it on your dining table instead of a keepsake box, I think it would make an awesome salt cellar or sugar packet holder.

This 160 piece box of Reflections silverware is still available for $15.59.  That's 40 settings, at about $0.39 per setting.  I bought two for Sukkot. These are a classy looking substitute for plain-old-plastic silverware, but are still disposable.

This very clever and poison-free bee trapper is just $8.26 on Amazon.  Have a bee-free Sukkot this year!

Since you're allowed to transfer flame on YomTov, do something different this year, and use a tea light chandelier in your Sukkah.  It's elegant, decorative, and creates a wonderful candlelit glow at night.  You still do need other light sources, as tealights don't give off a lot of light, so we use Christmas Sukkah stringlights as well.  Safety tip:  I would not recommend using regular candles with any of these chandeliers, as they can tip over and start a fire.  I would use only tealights, or even those flat, tealight-like citronella candles (does double-duty of keeping away mosquitoes).  Make sure you never leave a lit tealight chandelier unattended.  If you finish the YomTov meal before the tealights burn out, bring them back with you into the house.

You can get this beautiful Garden Oasis 5-Votive Candle Chandelier for $20.97 with free store pickup here from Sears.

There's also this one:  Shabby Elegance Scrollwork Chandelier for $18 with free shipping from Amazon. These are just 3 candles, so I would use at least two of them.

Don't have time to run around getting a whole bunch of stuff to decorate the Sukkah?  Get this huge box of Sukkah decorations for $44.99, including:
  • 3 small posters
  • 4" assorted colors tinsels 12'
  • Set of seven garlands - each with one of the 7 Species of Fruit (Sheva Minnim)
  • Stars for Sukkah
  • Shana Tova lantern with stand 18"
  • 12" 8 section ball in red/gold
  • 8" 12 section garland
  • Hanging bird (metalic)
  • 5" white feather swan
  • Feather bird
  • 7" colored feather bird
  • Plastic Yehuda Ben Teima
  • 7"  small grapes cluster
  • 6" 10 section apple garland
  • 8" 5 section 1 color and silver garland
  • 4" 3-ply tinsel 12-foot
  • Birds banner
Shipping is $4.95, and free shipping starts at $75 (so team up with a friend and buy two of these for the free shipping).

Nothing comes in more handy for carrying out multiples bowls of soup from the kitchen to the Sukkah than a good-sized sturdy and washable tray.  This Sterlingcraft oblong serving tray is just $5.79 with free Prime or SuperSaver (minimum $25 purchase) shipping.  It's 17-3/4" X 10-1/2", has got two secure handles and is made of a nickel/steel alloy, so it doesn't need polishing.  It's pretty with some finely detailed engraving on the base. At this price, I got two.

This week, OfficeMax is having a sale on folding tables and chairs.  (The price on chairs, in my opinion, is not a bargain.)  Get a 6-foot fold-in-half table, normally $79.99, for $49.99.  Find an OfficeMax near you here.  This sale price is in-store only.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the sukkah chandelier. It sounds beautiful. If the sukkah has bamboo poles that hold up the schach, do you attach the chandelier to the bamboo poles? It seems kind of unsteady for an open flame.

  2. Sheryl,

So I would attach it the way you'd attach any hanging ornament. If the bamboo poles are resting on a board, I'd attach it to the board, but I don't see anything wrong with tying it to the poles. (We use schach mats.) I usually just use a piece of strong twine. And the tea lights are wide and flat, so you don't really need to worry about tipping. If there is a wind, it generally just puts the flames out. I would not leave a lit sukkah chandelier unattended though. Since the tealights are not muktzah on YomTov, if we finish the meal ahead of the flames burning out, we just bring them in the house with us.

At night, sukkah chandeliers are beautiful. They don't give a tremendous amount of light, because the tea lights are smallish, so make sure you supplement it with string lights (or some other light source). A sukkah chandelier is certainly a classy alternative to what we used to use, which was one of those industrial corded outdoor lamps (so ugly) that are used for exterior work or camping.
