Calphalon 13-piece Tri-Ply set on Amazon: not a cheap deal, but definitely a frugal one

About two weeks ago, Amazon ran a Gold Box deal on an enamel pot set for $54.  It was actually a good deal moneywise, and some readers and friends asked me why I didn't post it on Daily Cheapskate.  I had to give them my honest answer.  Because even though $54 was a great price for an enamel pot set, I wouldn't pay ten cents for an enamel pot set.  And I don't want my readers to either.  I've owned enamel pots. I've owned non-stick pots. I've owned aluminum Farberware.  I've owned Kitchen Aid, and Cuisinart pots. I've been through about (no exaggeration) five different sets of pots since I got married in 2000.  And I've thrown out four of those sets

The winner is the Calphalon 13-piece Tri-Ply Stainless Steel Cookware Set.  I got it after several frustrating years of dealing with my cheapola "bargain" pots and pans sets, and may I just say this:  I consider it to be the Rolls Royce of pot sets. As silly as that may sound, I've seen it all.  There are some cookware sets that are good.  But the Calphalon Tri-Ply set is The Best.

It cleans up beautifully.  It goes right into your dishwasher and occasionally needs a little post-wash touching-up with BarKeepers Friend. I keep my cookware set out on a pot rack, and it gleams.  It cooks food wonderfully.  The core is aluminum, which heats up quickly and evenly, and the outer two layers are both stainless, which doesn't react with food.  The pots are constructed from all metal and heat-resistant glass covers, so they can even go into the oven (up to 450 degrees).  The handles are soldered on (not screwed on) and the pots are guaranteed for life.  Because the pots are all metal (except for the lids) they are easy to kasher if you'd like to use them for Pesach.

And happy news, my Amazon price tracker went off like a fire alarm this morning. The 13 piece Calphalon Tri-Ply set has now dropped to $279.99 with free shipping. That's just about $20 away from Amazon's all-time lowest price.

It's definitely not cheap, but I do think it's frugal. It's a great investment in your kitchen and your cooking experience.  I bought this set for much more at Bed Bath & Beyond (I thought I was getting a great deal on a $400 set, clutching my 20% off coupon in my little hand).

Please note, the set is priced at $359.99, but look for the link that says "8 new from $279.99."

The Calphalon Tri-Ply set is so worth the money.  I add to the set gradually when I see a special or sale on Tri-Ply individual pieces.  I've never had a set of pots this good, and I don't hanker for any other set.  I truly believe that using this set has made me a much better cook.
