A friend of mine posted a picture of the peanut butter shelves at King Soopers today, expressing her dismay at the current high price of peanut butter.
That reminded me that I did a post back here in October, when the first warnings about soaring peanut butter prices came out. We've been eating-down our stash of Skippy Peanut Butter, Reduced Fat Super-Chunk that I bought back then for $2.17 per 16.3 oz. jar (still four jars to go) so I haven't really been paying much attention to the peanut butter prices in the grocery stores or online. I thought it would be interesting to repost the links from October here, updated with the current prices.
- Get six 16.3-Ounce Jars of Skippy Peanut Butter, Roasted Honey Nut Super Chunk (my personal favorite) for $11.06, or $1.84 per jar. Currently $20.39 (with Subscribe & Save), up 84%.
- Get six 16.3-oz Skippy Peanut Butter Roasted Honey Nut Creamy for $12.33, or $2.06 per jar. Currently $29.53, up 139%.
- Get six 15-oz Skippy Peanut Butter Natural with Honey for $12.43, or $2.07 per jar. Currently $15.50 (with Subscribe & Save), up 25%
- Get six 16.3-oz Skippy Peanut Butter Reduced Fat Creamy for $12.68, or $2.11 per jar. Currently $40.99, up 223%.
- Get six 15-oz Skippy Peanut Butter Natural Super Chunk for $12.72, or $2.12 per jar. Currently $25.95 + $10.68 shipping, up 188%.
- Get six 15-oz Skippy Peanut Butter Natural Creamy for $12.77, or $2.13 per jar. Currently $18.99 + $4.99 shipping, up 88%.
- Get six 16.3-oz Skippy Peanut Butter Reduced Fat Super Chunk $12.99, or $2.17 per jar. Currently $44.99, up 246%.
So using this very small, unscientific sample as a gauge, the prices of various peanut butter items have gone up from 25%-246% in the last 7 months. If peanut butter is one of your often-bought staples, you can see why it's important to keep a rein on your grocery budget, and to stockpile on the things you need when you can.
Agreed. We just ran out of our stock recently. Replenishment came through the store-brand version. I prefer Skippy, but this is good enough until the prices go back down. (Besides, PB is not part of our daily diet.)
