LOWEST PRICE: Set of 17 Ikea Pruta food containers with lids for $10.99

Amazon has got this set of 17 Ikea Pruta food containers with lids for the lowest recorded Amazon price, $10.99 with free Prime/SuperSaver shipping.  Great idea for Pesach.

  • BPA-free product
  • Several food savers can be stacked inside one another
  • Includes: 17 food savers of various sizes
  • Microwave/Freezer/Dishwasher-Safe
  • Easy to store
Before Passover, I usually triage through and throw out or freecycle almost all of my old food storage containers.   At that point, much of it is missing lids, cracked, etc. Then I buy two new sets for Pesach and after the holiday, I hold them over to use during the year.

Ikea wire baskets, $9.76 on Amazon

Amazon has got this Ikea wire basket for $9.76 with free Prime/SuperSaver shipping.  I have four of these narrow baskets:  this is what I use to organize my Passover spices, baking goods, etc.  I have one filled with just baking stuff (KLP baking powder, sprinkles, vanilla extract, etc.) so that when I'm ready to bake, I just pull the basket out of my pantry.  These are free-standing, or you can hang them on a rail or a hook, or this special Ikea Bygel rod which can be mounted on the back of your counter or pantry.  These baskets are all-metal construction, so it's very easy to kasher them each year.

Highly-rated Ikea stainless steel garlic press on Amazon, $8.57

I'll just put it right out there:  I'm not a big fan of Ikea furniture, and I never have been. I just haven't had good experiences with the quality of Ikea furniture.

However, I am a HUGE fan of Ikea housewares. They are generally well-constructed of high quality materials, and they are priced well below what they might cost in other stores.

I bought the Ikea garlic press about two years ago and I love it. It's different from other garlic presses in that it has a removable insert that makes it super easy to clean, and you can use it on both peeled and unpeeled cloves.

Amazon is now carrying some Ikea kitchen tools, which is wonderful for those of us who don't live close to an Ikea store (or want to deal with navigating its indoor mazes). Right now Amazon has got the Ikea stainless steel garlic press for $8.57 with free Prime/SuperSaver shipping.  It got 4.5 out of 5 stars over 31 customer reviews.  Almost all of the stainless steel garlic presses that got similar ratings on Amazon cost nearly twice as much.
  • Removable insert makes cleaning easy.
  • Also works with unpeeled cloves.
  • Stainless steel, zinc, brush finish nickel-plated.
  • Handwash only.

Ikea Foodsaver Set (17 storage containers plus lids) for $11.27 on Amazon

Amazon has got this set of Ikea Foodsavers (17 storage containers plus lids) for $11.27 with free Prime/SuperSaver shipping.  These are BPA-free, microwave-safe (up to 200°F), freezer-safe, and dishwasher-safe.  This set got 4 out of 5 stars over 90 customer reviews.

Once a year, usually before Pesach, I triage through all of my tupperware and freecycle or toss 95% of it (warped from the dishwasher, no lid, cracked lid, milchig/fleishig status uncertain, old, inconvenient size, what-was-I-thinking,  retaining food smell, etc.).  I've always loved Ikea kitchenware and found it to be high-quality at very low prices.  What I really love about this set, besides the price, is how stackable it is when not in use (check out the photo below) and what a small footprint it will have in my overcrowded kitchen cabinet.   My kitchen seems to grow smaller each year.

Now, if you've got an Ikea in your neighborhood and are going there anyway, I recommend that you purchase these there, because this set costs $4.79 in-store.  I'm still going to buy this online through Amazon, even though I live about 35 minutes from an Ikea, because I'm not sure when I'll be able to go next, and the $6.48 difference  is not worth the time and I will probably end up spending that on gas roundtrip anyway.  But I did want to make you aware of that option.

DailyCheapskate Inbox time: Q&A with three readers

I love, love, love getting email from readers, especially the ones with great questions. Here are three goodies from May's inbox:
Dear Daily Cheapskate,
Where is the best (meaning cheapest) place to buy a lettuce spinner?  The one I see most often is the OXO one for $30, but I can get it for $24 at Bed, Bath with my coupon. Any better ideas?  I eat a lot of salad.  I hate wet lettuce, don't you?
-Amanda J., Brooklyn, NY
Dear Amanda,
Ikea.  $2.99.

Dear Daily Cheapskate,
I spend a fortune on organic produce and foods at Whole Foods all the time.  My friend told me about Sprouts and said they had the same kind of organics items but for much less.  What do you think?
Layla G., Dallas, TX
Dear Layla,
I shop at both Sprouts and Whole Foods; they each have their value. There are at least four Sprouts/Sunflower stores in the Dallas area, and here are some tips for saving money there.  First of all, if you haven't already, join Recyclebank and get yourself a stash of $5 off $40 coupons for Sprouts and never walk into the store without one in hand. That's a savings of 12% right there. Next, sign up for Organic Girl and Earthbound Farms coupons.  These are two national organic companies that offer tons of coupons. Organic Girl comes out with a multi-print pdf $1 coupon each month and Earthbound Farms has been coming out with a new $0.75 coupon each week.  Use them!   Recyclebank  also has Odwalla and Stoneyfield Farms coupons.   Next, go to the Sprouts website and sign up for their email list. They send out a coupon for a free organic product each month, as well as subscriber-only store coupons.  Like Whole Foods, you may stack one store coupon with one manufacturer's coupon per item at Sprouts.  They also have a ton of store coupons on their website, and the occasional one on their Facebook page.   Also, make sure you check out the Mambo Sprouts coupon page for their continuous list of organic coupons that you can stack with the store coups.  Finally, read my post on saving money on organics here.  And realize this:  you might not always be able to save money on organic produce and such.  If that is the case, and buying organics is a value to you,  you need to create a margin of money in areas where you can save, and then put that money towards those $6 bags of spinach.
Dear Daily Cheapskate,
I love your posts about Swagbucks and how the program is a "no-brainer" way to save money. I'm not such a couponer, but I'm so grateful to you for turning me on to Swagbucks, as I love Amazon gift cards. Got any other no-brainer ways to save money up your sleeve?
Robert G., Santa Fe, NM
Dear Robert,
I love Swagbucks too, believe me.  I'm always shocked to meet people who haven't signed up for  Swagbucks  yet.  I'm swimming in Amazon gift card credits thanks to Swagbucks.
My current top no-brainer is definitely the pre-paid American Express card deal. For the inconvenience of moving money around, you get a free $25.  No credit check, no fees, no strings, no nuthin, just a free $25 gift card.  I don't understand why anyone wouldn't take advantage of this offer.  It takes all of 2 minutes to fill out the form.
Other no-brainers?  Ok, here are three.
  1. Library cards.  Yes!  Not just for the books, but also for the free Kindle or iPad ebooks, the free movies/DVDs, free CDs., free legal mp3 downloads.  Many libraries also have free museum passes and low-fee classes, free movie screenings, etc.  Public library cards are fountains of free.
  2. Freecycle.  Freecycle is a national grass-roots group of community lists where basically you can get and give away free stuff.  The giving away is just as important as the getting, as decluttering is a major money-saver.  What have I gotten from Denver Freecycle lately?  Plants!  Lots of them. Over the last few months, I've picked up tons of aloe cuttings, spider plant cuttings, and a very cool basil plant.  My kitchen plant shelf runneth over with beautiful plants that have not cost me a red cent (sorry Home Depot). Tomorrow, a Freecycler is giving me five tomato plants that she doesn't have room for in her backyard.  What have I given Freecycle this month?  About 100 magazines, lots of tupperware that was past its prime, clothing, non-kosher freebies that came in the mail, and spare dog accessories.  I love  Freecycle .
  3. Target RedCard, .  You save 5% on every single solitary thing you buy at Target and Target.com. You get free shipping on Target.com with no minimum.  And as an added perk, the K-12 school that you name gets 1% of all your RedCard purchases.  You get special high-value Target coupons in the mail each month, including a few free-item coupons.  If your credit is less than sterling, you can get a RedCard debit card that just deducts money from your checking account, and there will be no credit check.  This is an extreme no-brainer.
Bonus round:  Three more no-brainers are cash-back programs,   ShopKick  (if you own a smartphone) and MyCokeRewards.  Ok.
Your turn! Anything to add about lettuce spinners, buying organics or money-saving no-brainers?

More frugal finds at Ikea

I love hate love getting emails from Ikea, but they tempt me too much to drive all the way to Centennial, where Colorado's new Ikea store is located. I suppose I should get there before all the holiday craziness starts.

Given that my previous posts on funcheapstuff at Ikea were among my most popular (here and here), I'll share my shopping list with you.  I'm not crazy about Ikea furniture, but their housewares department can not be beat.  Look at my latest Ikea frugal finds in housewares:

This stunning blue glass thing is a carafe. Mouth blown, drip free spout, dishwasher-safe.  I love it. And it totally matches my blue Shabbos china.  $12.99.  Also comes in gray.

Three-tier dessert plates are incredibly useful and save space on your table. I actually own two of them already, but in china, not glass.  We've got a small dining room and a way-too-small table (there's never enough room) so I actually use these for side dishes, like kugels or souffles.  I've never seen such a classic, pretty one for so little money:  $14.99.  I'm getting one for now, one for Passover.

An 8x10, dishwasher safe, stainless steel roasting pan with handles for how much?  $9.99?  I'll take two for now, two for Passover, please.  (Or, if I were insane, I can just pick up this Mauviel stainless steel pan for $180)

This four-piece baking/serving set is oven-safe, microwave-safe and dishwasher safe.  That's crazyuseful.  And $9.99.  One for meat, one for dairy.

$1.49 for six of these stackable, dishwasher-safe 6 oz. glasses?  Omigosh, that's $0.25 per glass, insanely cheap. I have plasticware that costs more than that.  At the rate that we break drinking glasses, I am seriously tempted to buy five packs of these and just keep them in the garage.

That's it for me. Find anything fabulously frugal in Ikea's housewares lately?  Comment away.

Four fantastic buys at Ikea, even cheaper this month when you join Ikea Family

Remember my post back here on my top five beautiful, practical, frugal kitchen finds at Ikea? Today I received an email from Ikea Family (Ikea's free loyalty program; you can sign up here) about a ton of items that Ikea Family members can get at a discount price from 10/1/11-10/31/11 only. I think it might be time to make another trip down to The Big I.

Here were my top four in-store favorites. Not all these items are viewable online, but I linked to them when I could. The prices on these items are nuts:

IKEA 365+  3-quart stainless-steel pot with lid, $10.99 (Non-member price:  $12.99)
Works well on all types of cooktops, including induction cooktops. Oven safe. Stainless steel. This is the least expensive stainless steel 3-quart pot I've seen in a long time.  I'm a huge fan of stainless.

Mysa Vete 100% Down & Feather Comforter (warmth rate 3), $59.99 twin, $79.99 full/queen, $89.99 king (Non-member price, $10 more on each size).
A down comforter for those who want the feeling of a warm comforter, but don't need the extra insulation. Panel stitched; keeps the filling in place. 100% white cotton cover.  Where else can you find a 100% cotton, 100% down & feather comforter for sixty bucks?

UPPTÄCKA  umbrella, $2.99 (Non-member price, $3.99).
Button for automatic opening. 100 % polyester, Steel, EVA plastic, Galvanized.  This umbrella will hold up in the wind.  Going to pick up one for the coat closet and two for each of our cars.

NJUTA slippers, $1.99 ( Non-member price, $2.99)
100% polyester, EVA foam, Polyurethane foam, Non-woven polyester fabric.  These are super comfy, super cheap, and I love love love these colors.  And at $1.99, when these get worn, toss them out, guilt-free.

What are your current favorite Ikea finds?

What to buy at Ikea: top five beautiful, practical, frugal kitchen finds

Ikea has a great reputation for one thing:  attractive, low-priced furniture.  The "low-priced" part is great, but unfortunately, their furniture is also famous for having a life span of about 3-5 years, until it falls apart.  I had some great modular Ikea furniture in my first post-college apartment, and if anecdotal evidence means anything, it too fell apart after about three years.

So if you're a few years past the post-college stage, maybe you should think about foregoing the furniture departments at Ikea.  I'm not saying all of their furnishings have short life spans, but I've yet to meet anyone with an Ikea bookcase that is twenty years old.

That said, a well-kept secret of Ikea is their fantastic housewares department.  I love love love Ikea housewares, kitchen stuff, cooking utensils, glassware etc.  They do seem to be well-made and you can purchase many of them for a song.

Ikea recently opened a new store in the Denver area, and last week, I reacquainted myself with their fabulous housewares department.  Here are five Ikea kitchen/table items, priced between $3-$10, that I have bought from Ikea and would recommend buying, based on 1) aesthetic beauty, 2) practicality and 3) unbelievably low price (the frugal trifecta).  You cannot get these online;  you can only purchase them at an actual Ikea store.  Here goes:
This large glass "Trygg" serving bowl is $2.99. I have never seen a glass bowl this size or quality for such a low price. Major steal.  It's actually prettier in person than in the picture, because the shape is more striking.  I picked up a few and set them aside for Passover.  I don't think you can ever have enough large glass bowls.  Mixing bowl, serving bowl, salad bowl, fruit bowl, you name it, this will do it.
This Rektangel glass vase for $4.99. A few years ago, I donated all of the two-dozen ugly florist vases I'd been saving to a wedding gemach and replaced them with four of these Rektangel vases.  They are beautifully cut, easy to clean (they go in the dishwasher), substantial enough to hold a large bouquet, and if they break, I'm out a mere $5. (Of course, many of the florist vases have reappeared over the years...I need to be better about giving them away.)
Pruta Food Savers, 17 in a set, $3.99, BPA-free clear tupperware-type containers. They stack up inside of each other and they beat out the price of Ziploc or Hefty containers by more than five times.  I did pick up an extra set of these for Passover as well.  The value here is unbelievable.
Tokig salad spinner for $2.99  I have never, ever seen a salad spinner priced this low. Ever.  Search for a salad spinner on Amazon and you'll see what I mean.  I've had my Ikea salad spinner for about 8 years now and it still does the job.  And these things are absolutely essential when you'll be cleaning and drying large amounts of lettuce (Passover seder anyone?).

6 Mjod beer glasses with stems, $9.99. A selfish part of me didn't want to post this one and almost hopes you won't buy these, because I love to put out unique, singular items on my table. But because these are such interesting glasses, I wanted to share them with you. We have three sets, and we actually set them out each week on our Shabbat table (except when I want a more formal table) instead of regular water glasses. They have such an unusual, low-slung profile and they mix and match with any kind of china or table setting.

Those are my current favorite top five Ikea frugal kitchen finds for now.  What are yours?
