How to save money on Purim Costumes: the Facebook Purim Costume Exchange Group

Last year, my New York friend (and sheitel-macher extraordinaire), Gitel, came up with a great frugal idea for Purim and asked me to help her set it up.  She wanted to create a Facebook group where people could post listings and pictures of gently used Purim costumes that their kids have outgrown or just don't want anymore, offer them for sale or trade for someone else's no-longer-needed costume.  I thought this was a fabulous idea.  To me, this sort of exchange is truly "going green," pooling resources so that everyone comes out a winner and saves money.  We had hundreds of people joining the group, mostly parents, posting, swapping, selling, and getting great "new" (to them) costumes for their kids.

This summer, Facebook went through yet another transition, and in the typical Facebook-fixing-something-that's-not-broken move, Facebook "upgraded" the group and wiped out the entire membership.  Grrrr.

We are in the process of building the group membership back up, and I thought I'd open it up to those of you in the DailyCheapskate readership who celebrate Purim and have kids at home in need of costumes.  You can join the Facebook Costume Exchange Group here.

Make sure that when you post pictures of the costumes you are offering, you also post your general area or city.  Some folks are fine about mailing things, and some don't want to be bothered.

I love it that the old mechanism of "gemaching" can get a boost from the new world of social media.   Join the Facebook Purim Costume Exchange Group here.
