I was in the throes of a major cutting board crisis.  Yes, I know.  I can feel your symp/empathy.  Tragic.

Here's the story.  I hate washing dishes by hand and I really hate hand-washing messy, smelly, germy, cutting boards on which I just sliced meat or fish.  I feel like they just never really get clean, and I don't like using bleach (as many recommend) on surfaces that will hold food.  I love the idea of putting cutting boards in the dishwasher and running the super-heated "sanitize" cycle to completely disinfect them.

Unfortunately, when you put a wooden cutting board through a few of those cycles, you wind up with a bunch of dried out, warped, split, broken cutting boards.  Guilty.  I went through two large, pricey wooden cutting boards like this.

I've since replaced them with beautiful bamboo cutting boards that I wash by hand, but I never feel like they are really clean after I slice up a whole salmon on one, or carve up a roast.  Hand-washing just doesn't do it for me, but I don't want to destroy these cutting boards in the dishwasher as well.
