For most of the areas that need to be lined for Pesach in my house, I have heavy duty vinyl that I pre-cut about eight years ago to the exact dimensions I needed, so that I can wipe it down and use it again from year to year. But I've gotten a few requests from those of you who like to use Contact Paper to line shelves and counters in their homes. And Contact Paper, for some reason, has gotten very expensive.
I've shopped around (Walmart, Target, Home Depot), and it looks like the going retail rate for Contact Paper is about a dollar per foot (not square foot, as the widths differ depending on how wide your shelves are, so I'm working with pure length) and upwards.
I found two nice deals, one on clear contact paper and one on decorative contact paper, both less than a dollar a foot. If you use Contact Paper, order them now so that they'll arrive in time for you to use them for Pesach cleaning.
The first one is an 18" x 24' roll of transparent glossy Contact Paper for $15.00 with free in-store or FedEx facility pickup from Walmart. This comes to $0.64 per foot (again, not square foot).
The next one is on this pretty black and white patterned Contact Paper, same dimensions, 18" x 24' for $9.58 with free Prime/SuperSaver shipping. That comes to $0.40 per foot.
I use contact paper, but would be more interested in something reusable.

What kind of store would sell that kind of vinyl (I have AMazon Prime, but not all your readers do I am thinking)

Hi Anonymous. I'm not the Daily Cheapskate, but I can tell you what I use. I bought flannel-backed patterned vinyl by the yard at Joann. It's like a vinyl tablecloth. I cut it to fit my drawers and cabinets about 5 years ago, and it's still going strong. I would imagine you could just buy some inexpensive vinyl tablecloths and cut those up. I put a little bit of tape in the corners of some drawers to hold it in place.

ReplyDeleteWhat I did was get heavy duty posterboard and I cut that to the same size as my counters. Then I covered that with the heavy duty flannel-backed vinyl that Terree used and voila, I had re-usable counter covers. And unlike other kinds of counter covers, I can wipe these down and clean them. When Pesach is over, I just line them up together and store them behind our Pesach storage boxes. Last year, one of the counter covers got some knife nicks in it, so I just recovered it with new vinyl.
As far as the shelves in my pantry, I just use the vinyl (no cardboard backing, but I write down which shelf it corresponds to, so I'll know for future years. That means that when it's time to line the shelves, I don't need to cut and measure, just put them into place. These too can be wiped down.
The vinyl can be purchased at Joann's or Amazon. It's a bit pricey, but it's a one-time investment that will save you time and money long-term.
