Two powerful air conditioners (18,000 BTUs or more) under $500

When buying a more powerful air conditioner for a larger space, here are a few things to consider:
  • Measure your space and make sure you are buying enough BTUs to properly cool it.
  • With more powerful air conditioners, I'd recommend sticking to Energy Star appliances, unless you want to see your electric bill soar through the roof.
  • Make sure you factor shipping into the price. If you are able to pick it up for free from a nearby store, good, but free or super-cheap shipping is even better.
  • Read the customer reviews religiously and pay attention to the bad ones. Check to see how many of the former customers would recommend this model air conditioner to a friend.
  • Take into account that the more powerful air conditioners will almost always require a special 230 volt electrical outlet. When I lived in NY, I had one installed by a licensed electrician for about $100.
  • Make sure you Google the model number to doublecheck that you're getting the absolute best price (including shipping).
  • Make sure that you can return the air conditioner conveniently if there is an initial issue.  Those things cost a small fortune to ship back.  The nice thing about buying from Walmart is that if there is a problem with the air conditioner, you can always just bring it back into a Walmart store for free (within certain time limits).
