Walmart has got the Coleman 40-quart thermoelectric cooler for $97.36 with free shipping. You are probably wondering why a blog about saving money is suggesting that you invest nearly a hundred dollars in a cooler.
Here's why: because it's the last cooler that you're going to buy. And you will never have to buy ice or dry ice again. And because you won't have to throw away heat-spoiled or water-logged wasted food again, or wonder if you should eat something "questionable."
I am a big road-tripper, with a long-time history of jumping into a car and just GOING. I also keep strictly kosher, so wherever I go, unless I know for a fact that kosher food will be available, I always need to bring it with me. After a few vacations where we had to stop every few hours to buy fresh ice (and dump out all the water from the old ice, which is always a joy), or I burned myself on dry ice, or I had to toss spoiled or wet food, at the urging and recommendation of a close friend, we decided to invest in a good thermoelectric cooler. What a smart, frugal idea that turned out to be.
Basically the Coleman thermoelectric cooler plugs into your car's lighter and keeps your food cold (down to 40 degrees) via electric-power, rather than ice-power. We also bought an adapter that allows us to plug the cooler into an outlet once we get to a hotel room. No more having to pay extra for a mini-fridge when traveling.
These coolers work very well and I've never had any food spoilage resulting from it yet. We are actually buying a second one to take with us to Alaska this summer (my husband's Jeep has two lighter outlets).
This $97.36 price is basically the lowest price I have ever seen on this cooler (and I've actually never seen one this size for under a hundred dollars). FYI, Amazon has this same cooler for $126.80.
This cooler got 4.3 out of 5 stars over 278 Walmart customer reviews.
Amazon has the best price on the wall outlet adaptor (for $15.97 with free Prime/SuperSaver shipping), which I also highly recommend buying along with the cooler.
