We keep about $500 (or more) in Home Depot cards, (which we've gotten from various free promotions and credit card rewards,) up on the kitchen bulletin board at all times as part of our house emergency fund. When our water heater died last year and we needed a new one in a hurry, those gift cards came in mighty handy. We also paid for a huge portion of our kitchen appliance upgrade with gift cards from various appliance stores. Gift cards rewards are the reason we put everything that we can on our credit cards (and then work diligently to pay them off each month). Point sales like this don't come around all that often, so if you've got credit card points banked, now is a great time to cash them in.
